The Ghost In Red Dress

I have a female friend whose brother always complained of headaches. To protect their privacy, I shall call my friend Jenny and her brother David. David had went to see the doctor several times but it did not cure his headaches.

So one day while having lunch with Jenny, I asked her if she was willing to meet up with my friend Thomas’ mom. I told her that Thomas’ mom had been known to cure mysterious illnesses but I stressed that she is not a doctor but someone who has the gift to heal others. If you’ve read my previous posts, you would know by now that Thomas’ mom also has the ability to see dead people.

Jenny agreed to persuade her brother to meet up with this old lady. I brought her and her brother to Thomas’ house the following week. It was in the evening time after Jenny’s brother came back from work.

Thomas welcomed us and introduced his mother to both Jenny and her brother. The old lady started with a tarot card reading and after going into deep trance for a while, opened her eyes and said “You are in danger. You are being followed.”

“Followed by whom?” asked David, stunned.

Thomas’ mom looked into his eyes and whispered, “Every evening when you come back from work, this long haired female ghost in red dress follows you to your house.”

I could see David’s face instantly turned deathly pale.

My own hair was standing.

“However,” Thomas’ mom continued, “she could not get into your house as your house is being protected.”

Jenny was shocked and blurted, “Why is she following my brother?”

“There are many reasons... but she’s definitely up to no good.”

“What should we do?” Jenny asked.

Thomas’ mom thought for a while then said, “You will do exactly what I said. I don’t care whether you are a Christian or a Buddhist. You just follow.”

She continued to explain that some people who sought her help were Christians and they did not agree to burn incense and wear amulets as it was against their religion. Jenny and David were both Buddhists so they did not have a problem adhering to her advice.

I could not remember exactly what she asked them to do except that it involved some prayers, burning of incense and staying indoors after dark at night. She also burnt an amulet (“fu” in Chinese), dissolved it in a glass of water and asked David to drink it.

One week later, Jenny called me up to say that David’s headaches were gone. They were to meet up with Thomas’ mom again later that day and asked me to come along. But I was busy that day and decided not to go.

It was only a month later that I bumped into Jenny at a shopping mall. I asked her about David and she said he’s OK and he had no more headaches. But she told me the night after they did the burning of incense as instructed by Thomas’ mom, David was involved in a car crash. The car was damaged very badly but incredibly, David only had a small cut on his hand.

When Jenny asked her brother what happened, David said “I was driving when suddenly a lady with long hair and dressed in red stood in front of my car. I swerved to avoid her and crashed into the drain.”

Note: This is a true story except for the ending. I spiced up the ending to make it sound scary. Hope it works. The real ending is this - David did not get involved in a car accident. After doing exactly as instructed by Thomas' mom, his headaches gradually went away and that was the end of it. Did he believe about the female ghost who followed him every night? Yes, but after his headaches were gone, he knew she no longer followed him.

Regarding the car accident at the end of the story, I did not really made that up. I just simply combined two real stories into one. Thomas' mom once told me about a lady who came to see her about her son. He was having a spate of bad luck recently. When she recommended the lady to burn incense for her son, she refused saying that it's all mumbo jumbo. Furthermore, she's a Christian and would do no such thing. Two weeks later, the lady came crying to Thomas' house. She wept that her son died in a fatal car crash. The car landed in a drain and was badly damaged. Thomas' mom did not console her. Instead she said, "I told you what to do but you refuse to listen. Why do you cry? It's too late to do anything now."

This is scary Foong! I had goosebumps while reading this. Do I believe in such things? Yes, I do. I heard from close family friends and relatives about their experiences with a ghost lady (the one dressed in black is a bad omen), and there is no reason for me not to believe them. I've had a couple of experiences myself which cannot be explained. I believe that when someone pass away, their spirit visit their love ones. When my grandfather passed away in the Philippines, I smelled the scent of a candle that has been blown out. When it was the death anniversary of my grandmother (to whom I was very close to) I smelled her perfume when I was in my Chemistry class. These are just some of my personal experiences. I know a lot of people don't believe in these things but I do.

The Chinese believe that if something in you is very low (dunno what they call it), you get to see ghosts all the time, not if it's high. Heard of a group of guys in a car driving in the middle of the night, and one saw a lady by the roadside. He told the rest and they turned back...but all of them could not see except him...and he was so scared till he pee-ed in his pants, begging the friend to drive off....

babette, I believe you. I think those people who don't believe such things have never experienced it before. Maybe you should share your experiences in your blog : )

molly, your hair will really be standing if you were there at that time hearing those words spoken by Thomas' mom!

suituapui, I think it's called "si wan" in Cantonese. If it's low, you are more likely to see ghosts. Do you know your "si wan" can become low if you are depressed or if the energy field (chi) around you is low?
Yes, it's really scary if only you alone and nobody else see it. I think can make you go crazy! : )

you know what? I have a friend who had a "thing" following her. We knew about it, even though at first it was scary but after a while we got used to it but it's always kinda eerie when walking at night to her house (that's when her friend's presence can be felt) - or is it also because of the Jirat Cina we have to pass through? :D

bengbeng, thanks. It's a true story except for the ending.

tekkaus, thanks! I didn't know you like horror stories. Well, be prepared for more to come but I'm afraid I only write true ghost stories only (ie. from my own experience or my friends') so there's a limit to how many I can write.

What your friend's mom said was right. It was too late to do anything. Nothing's going to hurt burning some insense and because of her unwillingness, her son died. Was religion more important than saving her son's life?

Even though I am a Christian, I still believe in the spiritual and ghost thingy. But I believe if one doesn't do bad deeds, you should not afraid of this kind of thing. Regarding the lake, you can read my entry here - http://lifeislikethat.com/?p=482

jam, are you sure if you don't do bad deeds you don't have to worry about such things? I'm not too sure cos there are many "good" people experiencing such things.
