Can You See Dead People?

I went out for lunch with my colleague the other day. Her name is Esther. She is married with two kids. A lovely boy aged 10 and a pretty girl aged 8.

As we sat down to lunch, she looked tired. I asked her why was she so tired.

"I could not sleep these few days." She told me. "Phoebe did not want to sleep in her room and wanted to sleep in her parents' room instead."

When I asked her why, she said, "Phoebe said there is a man in her room."

"What?!" I was stunned.

"She said the man would appear once in a while. She could see his face and the shirt he's wearing."

"Really?" I did not want to sound skeptical, but I really found it hard to digest, despite my beliefs in such things.

"She is scared and won't dare to sleep alone in her room." Esther continued.

"Have you seen it yourself?" I asked.

"No. But I saw him for the first time yesterday. And it freaked me out!"

My hair was standing when I heard her say this.

"How does he look like?" I asked.

"Oh, please don't ask me to describe. All I know is he does not look normal. I mean, one look at him, and you know he's a dead person!"

"Oh my God, that's so scary! Did your husband see him too?"

"No, and I have not told him yet!"

"Why not? You should!"

"Maybe later, I am thinking how to tell him without making him panic. You see, my husband is not fond of horror movies and I think he's more scared of ghosts than me!"

I could not help letting out a little nervous giggle. "But surely, he knows about what Phoebe saw, right?"

"Yes," Esther said "Phoebe comes into our room almost every night so yes, he knows but he tells Phoebe it's just her imagination. At first I thought it's just one of her many dreams, but it can't be happening every night. Besides, I saw him too!"

"You are really freaking me out, Esther!" I exclaimed.

"You saw the man in your room?" I asked, trying not to use the word 'ghost'.

"No, in Phoebe's room. Yesterday, I wanted to accompany Phoebe to sleep in her room so she would not disturb us. I think it was almost midnight. Both my son and my husband were already asleep. I was lying down beside Phoebe, when she suddenly pulled my hand and said she want to go to our bedroom.

I was almost asleep at that time and her pulling woke me up instantly. It was then, I noticed a presence beside me. I looked up and saw him starring down at us! Oh my God, I almost screamed! I think I felt a little faint at that moment like all the blood in my body had been drained off.

Luckily I kept my composure. I pretended I did not see him, but my heart was beating like mad! I avoided looking at him and faced my daughter instead. She also avoided looking at him and kept whispering to me she wanted to go to my bedroom.

Slowly, I forced myself to sit up. I hoped I could just close my eyes and hide under the blanket! I told Phoebe to follow me to my bedroom. All this while, that thing was there looking at us. Or that's what I thought cos I did not dare look at him!

We walked slowly out of the room and then bolted towards my bedroom! Once inside my bedroom, I locked the door! Although I know that's pretty useless."

I could feel a chill running up my spine as my friend described her story.

"What about Michael?" I asked referring to her son. "He sleeps alone in his own room, right? Did he see him too?"

"No, he had not mentioned about it to me, so I don't think so." Esther replied.

"So this man - he never ever appeared in your room, only Phoebe's room?" I asked, curious.

"Yes, so far only in Phoebe's room. Oh, sometimes Phoebe said she sees him in the kitchen too. I really don't know what to do. But so far, he has not disturbed us. I mean, he did not create any trouble. According to a friend of mine, he may just be a harmless ghost still trapped in this world."

"Or maybe he cannot leave yet as he still has things he needs to do."

"Oh! You make it sound as if I am Melinda Gordon!" Esther laughed, obviously referring to that character played by Jennifer Love Hewitt who sees and helps ghosts in Ghost Whisperer.

We both laughed but I hardly thought it was a laughing matter. I had wanted to talk some more, but that was the only time we had. It was a short lunch time for us so we had to stop there. In any case, Esther's story ended up haunting me for the rest of that day!

Last night, I received a call from Esther. She mentioned that her friend who stayed a few streets from her house also saw the ghost. But the friend did not see the ghost in Esther's house. Instead, she saw it in her own home!!

I was shocked.

"Are you sure it's the same ghost?" I asked, getting nervous.

"Yes, from what she described to me, I knew it's the same ghost!"

"But how? I mean, why would he go over to your friend's house? And it's not that near to your house!" I was puzzled.

"You know what?"

"What?"

"I think he can transport himself through the phone."

"What?" She did not make any sense to me.

"You see, I am always calling my friend on her handphone using my handphone. Somehow, I think the ghost can adjust his frequency level to travel along the frequency level of the mobile phone line."

"You must be kidding." I said, not believing her at all. "You mean the ghost can travel anywhere using your phone?"

"Yes, that's what I suspect. Because the ghost also appeared in my cousin's house. And my cousin stays in Penang! I have been calling my cousin the past few days on my handphone."

"Haha! That sounds like science fiction to me!" I said laughing. "By the way, I notice you are using DIGI."

I suddenly stopped laughing. "I am using DIGI too. Wait...where are you calling from?"

"My house."

Oh. My. God!!!

Note: That last part about the ghost traveling through mobile phone lines is a total fiction which I made up just for fun! Haha! But let me assure you, the rest of the story is true. I have changed my friend's name to protect her privacy. In any case, I have absolutely no plans to visit my friend's house now or in the future!

PS: The 7 Stages Of Disease (Part 2) had been put off as I was too eager to tell this ghost story. It will be in my next post coming right up!

The 7 Stages Of Disease (Part 1)

Posted by : foongpc | Thursday, May 28, 2009 | Published in

Reading the newspaper the other day, I was depressed by the news that Farrah Fawcett, one of the original Charlie's Angels was fighting a losing battle with cancer. Read about it here.

It was already depressing to learn about Steve Job's battle with cancer a few months earlier, although sources close to him denied his current health problems have anything to do with cancer.

Cancer is a killer. My own brother-in-law died of colon cancer a few years back. At the time of diagnosis, he was already at Stage 4 where doctors said his chances of survival were slim.

Nobody likes to read depressing news and I am not going to depress you further with my post today. But, I am just very concerned that most people are largely ignorant about this disease.

Cancer doesn't just happen overnight. It takes years and years for cancer to develop. You don't wake up one morning and discover you have cancer!

Let me clue you in on this. It takes one year for a single cancer cell to become 12 cells. At that rate, it will take 6 years for cancer to be the size of a pencil point and about 10 years to even be detectable.

Most people will agree that cancer is a lifestyle problem. As you can see, it is not easy getting cancer. It takes years and years of health abuse to reach the cancer stage. But nowadays, the statistics are really frightening. 1 in 3 people will get cancer in their lifetime in USA. In Malaysia, it is 1 in 4 people. How can that be?

If you analyse how people live their lives nowadays, you will then understand why the rate of cancer cases is so high. If people continue to be ignorant, I won't be surprised that one day, 1 in 2 people will get cancer in their lifetime.

So what really is cancer cell? According to Harvey Diamond, the author of the book Fit For Life, a cancer cell is a normal cell so deranged by toxic substances that it loses contact with and is no longer controlled by the brain. It is literally been driven 'crazy' by poisoning and it is 'out there on its own'.

In his book, Harvey explained how cancer develops. I find it interesting and would like to share with you all here. Hopefully with this piece of information, you will be more aware and prevent cancer from happening in the first place.

Harvey divided the process of getting cancer in 7 stages. As you start to abuse your body and your health, you will progress from a totally vibrant health to Stage 1,2, 3 and so on until the final stage 7, which is the cancer stage.

In my next post, I shall share with you each and every stage. Stay tuned!

Will You Still Watch American Idol Without Simon Cowell?

Posted by : foongpc | Sunday, May 24, 2009 | Published in

Well, will you?

Some of you may say "I don't watch American Idol whether Simon is in it or not!"

Well, if that happens to be you, then bye bye and come back for my next post, sweetie!

And there are some of you who will ask "Who the hell is Simon Cowell?"

Or even worse. "What the heck is American Idol?"

Well, for those of you who think American Idol is the newest franchised restaurant in town, or a store selling branded clothes from USA, then you too may skip this post. You don't belong here. Or should I say, you don't belong to this planet we called Earth! Maybe you are an alien from some other planet.

OK, OK, if you really really do not know what is American Idol, please google it, read about it and then come back here, will you? I am doing this out of sympathy for those few of you who had either just woken up from a 10-year long coma, or had just miraculously returned from the Bermuda Triangle after disappearing into another dimension for more than 10 earth years.

So that's how long it has been yes? I mean the American Idol reality show. Well, almost.

This latest season which is the 8th season, sees one of the best finales in the history of American Idol. Yet, the finale and the final result show registered one of the lowest ratings for American Idol in years. I wonder why.

Are viewers fed up with the show? Are they bored with the contestants? The judges? The host? Even Kara DioGuardi strutting herself in a bikini on stage didn't help!

Photo of Kara courtesy of News America Now

Maybe a lot of people think American Idol is crap. Well, after the result a few days ago, I am inclined to think so too. Kris Allen is the winner and not Adam Lambert? I really don't get it, but if that's how Americans voted, so be it!

Photo of Adam Lambert and Kris Allen courtesy of mtv.com

Now I am not going to dwell on this issue because I think it's been talked to death in many other blogs. So my post today will deal with the famously acerbic judge, Simon Cowell.

Oh, before that, did you hear that song written by judge Kara DioGuardi for both the finalists to sing? I think it's called "No Boundaries" or something. I absolutely hated that song! Couldn't she come up with something better? Last I heard, this song to be made into a single for Kris Allen was poorly received.

Anyway, Simon Cowell's contract with American Idol will expire in 2010. Will his contract be renewed? Most likely, but the question is, will the man himself stay on? He had already considering leaving the show so we may not have Simon in American Idol after 2010.

Photo of Simon courtesy of Square Eyes

So that leads me back to the title of my post today and the question I have been dying to ask.

Will you still watch American Idol if Simon Cowell is no longer one of the judges?

Maybe they should just get rid of the four judges and bring in fresh new ones. Or Simon Cowell should just stay on while the other three judges are to be replaced. What do you think?

My Manukan Island Trip (Part 2)

Continued from Part 1

After a 20 minute bumpy ride on the speedboat, we reached Manukan Island. Despite the pain in my butt, I enjoyed the ride. I could see that the Korean lady who "ouched" all the way from Jesselton Point was eager to leave the boat!

jetty 2

Getting off the boat onto the jetty, I saw this 'No Fishing' sign.

no fishing 4

Looking down into the waters from the jetty, I could see lots and lots of fishes!

fishes 6

But we were not allowed to fish! Looks like they have lots of different kinds of fishes here as they had put up this signboard for anyone who is interested.

I just love this view of the sea taken from the jetty walkway. I am not a good photographer - just a novice - so what you see here actually looks much better in reality. I instantly fell in love with the place even before I stepped onto the island!

view of jetty 2

At the entrance to Manukan Island, I had to pay RM3 entrance fee. Non Malaysians were charged RM10.

I spent the first hour walking round the island snapping photos of the beautiful beaches.

Isn't this picturesque? I could just sit here and look at the sea forever!

Lots of rocky beaches here!

These trees provided a nice shade from the sun.

I liked that the beach was not overly crowded. Maybe it would be more crowded during the weekends.

Besides, the beach was very clean!

It's no wonder! Look at this man driving a tractor. He's actually collecting rubbish from the beach. Sometimes he would get down from his tractor with a rake in his hand and removed plastic bags and other rubbish from the beach.

There were lifeguards there too in case of emergency.

There were swimmers, snorkelers and beach tanners all enjoying the beautiful nature of Manukan Island.

There were a few beach resorts and chalets on the island. There were also a few eateries and even a badminton court.

This is a stairway up to the Manukan Lodge.

The Manukan Lodge building is mostly for backpackers and those on shoestring budget.

As I love jungle trekking, I took the opportunity to walk the jogging trail. Along the way, I passed by this resort facing the beach.

beach hotel 2

Definitely it is the more expensive beach resort for those with more money and prefer more luxury.

Walking along the jogging trail proved to be quite interesting as I came face to face with a giant biawak or monitor lizard. It was huge, about two feet long. I tried to take a photo but it hurriedly scurried away into the bushes!

I only managed to snap this photo of a baby monitor lizard instead.

baby monitor lizard

Look! This was another baby lizard that was camouflaged as its colour was almost similar to the stone it was standing on.

Besides monitor lizards, there were many butterflies flying around. I managed to capture one when it rested on the tree leaves.

Looking up the trees, I snapped these photos. I just like to look at the sun light streaming down between the trees.

The jogging trail was quite long. I think I took more than 30 minutes to reach the end. Maybe if I jogged, it would have been much faster. Anyway, the end of the trail was a dead end! It was a small area with a shelter.

sunset pt hut 2

In fact, this spot is known as Sunset Point. It is supposed to be the highest point on the island to see the sunset.

sunset point 2

Well, too bad it was not sunset yet. Anyway, this is the view from here.

I thought the trees were really blocking my view of the horizon! The other side did not have much of a view!

sunset point view 2

Anyway, since this Sunset Point is a dead end, I had to turn around and walk back the way I came.

I returned to the beach and went for a swim. Actually more like wading in water cos I do not know how to swim! Then, I bought myself a nice coconut drink, found a nice spot on the beach and just sat there with a good book I bought the day before at a bookstore in Warisan Square. Oh, this is bliss!! How nice if my life is like this every day!

I think I am a simple person. All I want is just to sit down beside the sea with a good book and a nice drink, and enjoying the sea breeze and listening to the wonderful relaxing sound of the waves.

waves beach 3

In 3 hours, I would be at KK International Airport waiting for my flight home. Within the next few hours, I would be back at home in KL. And the very next day, I would be back at work as usual.

I really think I could cry.

My Manukan Island Trip (Part 1)

Posted by : foongpc | Monday, May 18, 2009 | Published in

My last day in Kota Kinabalu (KK) was spent lazing away on an island.

I woke up very early at 7am to check out of Lavender Lodge. I know to some of you, 7am is not considered early, but to a night owl like me, it was just too damn early! I had to check out early because I was afraid I would not be back on time. Their check out time is 12pm.

Leaving my luggage with them at the counter, I left by foot to Jesselton Point. It was a brisk 15-20 minutes walk from Lavender Lodge to this ferry terminal to the islands surrounding KK.

After passing the Royal Customs Office on my left, I saw this big welcome entrance to Jesselton Point.

Jesselton Point 2

The ticket counters were inside the building on the immediate right after the entrance. Walking around, I saw these very unique telephone booths!

phone booth 2

I don't believe I have seen these phone booths anywhere else in KK. Unless I am wrong. Any resident from KK reading this? Please confirm if this is true.

There were also many restaurants here. As I looked around, I could not help but noticed that the sky had turned dark. Oh no! Please don't tell me it's going to rain! It would surely be no fun going on an island trip in a storm! I was thinking of cancelling my island trip. Maybe I should just visit some other places instead.

But I could not think of anywhere else to go, so what the heck! No rain was going to stop me from enjoying my day at the beach! With my mind made up, I went into the ticketing building.

Now, there are five islands which made up this popular marine park known as the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. The five islands are Pulau Gaya, Pulau Sapi, Pulau Manukan, Pulau Mamutik and Pulau Sulug. The largest is Pulau Gaya, but the most popular is Pulau Manukan.

Since I would be leaving KK in the evening, and I had to reach the airport by 3pm, I decided that the time was too limited for me to go island hopping. So following the recommendation of those nice people at Lavender Lodge, I opted to go Manukan Island.

But I was in for a surprise when the friendly staff at the ticketing counter told me that the ticket is for a minimum 2 pax. In other words, if only one person were to go, he would have to pay the price of 2 people! I guess this must be one of those disadvantages of traveling alone!

So I forked out RM34 for the ticket (RM17 per person) and RM6 for the tariff fee. I don't exactly know what this tariff fee is for - anyone knows?

island ticket

I was expecting it to rain as I walked out of the ticketing building, but surprise! The sky was blue and the sun was shining down hot. Where did those dark clouds go? They were there just a moment ago! It was then that I came to my second realization since my trip to KK.

My first realization is that the sun rises and sets earlier in KK than in KL.

My second realization is that the weather in KK can change in an instant. One moment it would be hot and sunny. The next moment, it would be raining like nobody's business.

I think reading the weather forecast is practically useless in KK. Maybe because of its close proximity to the South China Seas? I really don't know. Anyone who knows, please enlighten me.

At the jetty, a man checked my ticket and led me to a speedboat. There were already many people sitting inside the boat waiting for it to fill up.

boatride 4.3

The photo above was not taken during my boat ride to Manukan Island. Instead, it was taken on my way back from the island.

I did not have the opportunity to take any photos during my boat ride to the island as I was not sitting at the back. All the seats at the back were already taken, so I had to sit at the front (head) of the boat.

And, oh boy, if you have ever sat in the front of a speedboat, you would understand how it feels like!

The entire 20 minutes ride was a painful experience! At least that's how it was to my poor ass. I was practically thrown up and down like a toy!

And I was not alone. A Korean lady sitting next to me kept shouting "Ouch!" every 20 seconds. I am not joking! Some people sitting at the back were laughing aloud over her shouting. I myself could not help smiling even as I winced from the pain as the boat continued to bounce up and down mercilessly.

I could not believe I did this, but guess what? I counted how many times the Korean lady shouted "Ouch!" and it totaled 47 times!! LOL!

That was really a heck of a ride and I promised myself that on the return trip, I must make sure I sit right at the back! I really doubted my poor, sore ass could take a second beating! Haha!

To be continued...

All About Bathing

Posted by : foongpc | Saturday, May 16, 2009 | Published in

I am supposed to blog about my trip to Manukan Island today but I think I would blog about it in my next post if you don't mind.

Instead, I want to talk about bathing.

Yes, bathing.

I know of someone who goes into the bathroom to have his bath and comes out less than 5 minutes later. Now tell me, do you think he had a decent bath or not? I mean, is 5 minutes enough time to ensure you are clean?

To me, 5 minutes bathing is like "mandi kerbau". To those not familiar with this Malay term, it means not proper or ineffective bath or shower. It also means one who bathe with water only, without using soap.

I just cannot imagine how one can do a quickie in 5 minutes. And I am not talking about sex. Can you imagine he finishes his shower before I finish cooking my instant noodles?

How on earth he manages to clean his scalp, scrub the part behind his ears, in between each of his toes, his armpits and his private parts in under 5 minutes? Oh, you don't do any of those things? I see. Well, if anyone of you say it's possible to do all those in under 5 minutes, please make a YouTube recording of you bathing and show it to me! Haha!

Image taken from Hansgrohe

My next issue with bathing is how often do you take your bath? Once a day? Twice a day? Or once a week?

I know of someone living in UK who bathes once a month. Can you believe it? I know the cold weather there does not make you sweat as much as here in Malaysia, and I'm not too keen to shower in the cold too, but once a month?

I don't know about you, but I sure as hell don't want to be any where near that person!

Image from parpool-spa.com

My third issue regarding bathing is do you sing in the bathroom? Well, do you? I don't know why but some people become instant karaoke singers in the bathroom. I'm amazed they could remember every single lyrics of the song or songs they are singing. And they sing so loudly, I won't be surprised if the next door neighbours can hear them too!

It's OK if they sing like Kelly Clarkson or Adam Lambert, but no, they sound too much like William Hung to me!

Well, I am embarassed to say I like to sing in the bathroom too, but I don't sing so loudly to the extent that people come knocking on my bathroom door and ask me to shut the hell up! Maybe it's the acoustics in the bathroom - it sort of make your voice sound so much better, doesn't it? No joke, I thought I sounded so much better than David Cook at one time. In the bathroom, that is.

Or maybe it's nicer to sing in the nude? Hmmm....

Image from highlightskids.com

By the way, do you use soap bar or liquid shower gel for your bath? I prefer shower gel mainly because it's more hygienic if you share with others. Secondly, I just feel that the bar is too clumsy to be used when your hand is wet.

And this is an advice especially for men. You don't want to be picking up that bar of soap on the floor in a public bathroom that is filled with other men. You know what I mean, don't you? No? Never mind! Just don't use the public bathroom!

Just two days ago, I was at Tesco in Damansara Mutiara and I saw this special offer. Buy a 1 litre Dove shower gel for RM19.90 and get a free 400ml Dove shower gel. Pretty good deal yes? So I quickly grabbed three bottles!

And I brought back three 400ml bottles (only one bottle in the picture, which is the one on the right) free!

If you don't want to miss this offer, quickly head over to Tesco now!

Oh, and since we are on the subject of bathing, if you really don't know the proper way to shower, read How To Take A Shower from wikiHow. Showering will never be the same again!

Have a happy weekend, everyone! : )
