Steamboat Potluck Party 2013

I know Chinese New Year is over, but that does not mean I can't blog about it right?

On the 15th day of Chinese New Year, I went to a potluck party at my friend's house. Maybe I should be at the river collecting oranges, but I think going to a potluck party is way more fun! Haha!

I could not decide what to bring to the potluck but in the end, I bought a nice cake (which I shared with a friend) from the Australian Confectionery in SEA Park.

We started with the yee sang.



After adding the crackers on top, it was 'lou sang' time! I always enjoy mixing all the ingredients and tossing them high while saying auspicious words.



This is the yee sang all ready to be eaten in my bowl. Yummy!



After the yee sang, I went straight for the mushroom pasta.



It was delicious and I had wanted to go for another round but there were more food awaiting me!



The highlight of the evening of course was the steamboat. My friend, the host, had carefully prepared all the raw ingredients on skewers ready to be placed in the hot boiling pot!



Other ingredients for the steamboat included these prawn dumplings...

Fresh prawns ....



And mushrooms.



The skewers were an ingenious way to enjoy the steamboat. It was hygienic - No dipping chopsticks into a pot of boiling soup and tasting everyone's saliva!

A big plate of cooked meat and seafood taken out of the boiling pot was put on the table for all to eat!



Honestly, even though there were about 15 of us, we could not finish all the cooked meat! Some of us had to bring them back to be eaten for lunch the next day.

Besides the steamboat, there was also raw chicken ready to be cooked or microwaved.



Minutes later, the chicken were ready but I was late in taking the photo. Look! Some already went missing! Obviously, we had many hungry people at the potluck party that evening.

I think I ate loads of strawberries, persimmons, pomelo, apples and cashew apples! There was a big bowl of grapes too but I did not take any photos.

Lastly for dessert, I took out the cake which my friend and I bought. I think it's chocolate praline cake though I could not really remember the exact name.



The walnuts on top of the cake made it super delicious!! It was finished up in no time.



I had a great time at the potluck party. Besides the food, chatting with a group of friends were really, really enjoyable. My friend the host had assured us that she would organize another pot luck party again next year. And I am invited. Yay!!

My Dinner At Tonkatsu By Ma Maison

Last week, my family and I went to Isetan Eat Paradise in 1Utama for dinner.



There were many Japanese restaurants at Eat Paradise, and I guess most people are already familiar with Menya Musashi and Ichiro Sushi Bar.

We did not go to Menya Musashi. Instead, we went to Tonkatsu.



Or more precisely, Tonkatsu by Ma Maison. It was our first time there.



Oh! Free refill for salad, soup and rice! Sounds great!! Though I must admit I never refill rice! : )



It was around 6pm and the restaurant was not crowded yet. Perfect!



It's probably not crowded as it was Chinese New Year week and most Chinese people were back in their hometowns. No guarantees it won't be crowded now that Chinese New Year is over!

The restaurant interior was pretty interesting.

I like the wallpaper! It looks like something cut out from jeans, don't you think? Haha!



Even the menu book cover has the same theme as the wall.



If not mistaken, this restaurant has its origin at the Mandarin Gallery in Singapore.



There was a variety of sauces and condiments on the table. The 2 teapots contained different tonkatsu sauces - one sweet and the other spicy.



Inside the menu book there was a picture of a pig. If you are completely new to tonkatsu and have no idea what this Japanese food is, then this pig may give you a hint : )

The menu was actually quite extensive. You can choose from pork, to chicken, to seafood. And the good thing is, you can have unlimited refills of rice, cabbage (salad) and tonjiru (pork miso soup) with every set you order.



For the rice, you have the option to go for either plain white rice or multi grain rice.

At first, we were a bit confused on how to order and enjoy the food here but luckily, they have a pretty good printed guide to help us out!







You can also order additional sauce at RM2.00 each. We did not order any as we were already overwhelmed with the variety of sauces and condiments on the table.



After ordering our food, it did not take very long before they came out with the Oroshi (white radish). It's customary to start with Oroshi before the Tonkatsu as it helps to refresh the digestion before the meaty onslaught!



The Oroshi can be eaten plain but I like it with some Tamari (Japanese soy sauce) dressing. Yum!



Every set you order also comes with a free flow of Japanese Roasted Barley Tea. The tea was perfectly suited to accompany the Tonkatsu.



So here's what we ate that evening...

Negi Miso Hire Katsu Set or Deep Fried Pork Fillet with Negi Miso Sauce (RM28.90)



Chicken Katsu Set (RM23.90)



Notice the 3-compartment plate? That's for you to put in the rock salt and the tonkatsu sauce. Grind the rock salt into the compartment on the far right, and filled in the remaining compartments with either the sweet or spicy tonkatsu sauce or both.

The rock salt is supposed to help bring out the flavor of the meat. However, I found myself dipping the meat in the sweet tonkatsu sauce, which I like best!



All meat and no vegetables is bad for health so it's really nice to see a huge portion of salad next to the meat. The shredded cabbage slices are best eaten with some salad dressing.

Katsu Don or Deep Fried Pork Loin topped with Egg and Special Soy Sauce (RM25.90)



This looks really yummy, no?



But I did not eat that! Instead, I opted for their signature Mameton Set or Deep Fried Prawn, Pork Loin and Pork Fillet (RM32.90)



This was delicious! Yummy!! The pork loin was juicy (and fattening!) and was of course better (and more sinful) than the pork fillet.



Can you see that dollop of brownish yellow-colored poo on the plate? Well, that's not poo of course, but it sure looks like one to me haha! Actually, I am not sure exactly what it was but I think it's spicy mustard.

The rock salt, sweet and spicy tonkatsu sauce to dip my meat in.



My multi grain rice. I added some roasted sesame seeds onto my rice later which made it more fragrant.



The Tsukemono (pickles) complemented the rice.



A yellowish sauce (I think it's tartare sauce) came together with my set. For the fried prawns perhaps?



Also included in this set was a small cup of noodles in soup. It was delicious! I wanted more of this noodles actually but unfortunately it was not refillable like the salad, tonjiru and rice.



I ended up with refilling the salad and tonjiru twice. All my family members loved the salad and had it refilled.

These are the four must-have condiments which I laid out on the table just to take a photo. LOL!

After we were done with our dinner, we were given complimentary desserts in the form of collagen jelly.



Yes, collagen. Good for skin and health. Although I wonder how much actual collagen were in the jelly. Too bad it's not refillable. Haha!!



Overall, I enjoyed the food at Tonkatsu by Ma Maison. The price was slightly on the high side but still OK considering the unlimited refills of rice, salad, tonjiru and not forgetting, the roasted barley tea. Now if only the oroshi is refillable as well! : )
